Why sewage needs a different approach
Water from a sewer backup is black water: it carries bacteria and other contaminants. Anything porous it touched, like carpet, underpad, drywall, insulation and upholstered furniture, can't be safely cleaned and has to be removed. Hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected before drying.
Our IICRC-certified crew wears protective equipment, contains the area so contamination doesn't spread through the house, and disposes of materials properly. Keep children and pets out of the area until it's cleaned.
Why backups happen in the GTA
In heavy storms, many GTA sewers fill beyond capacity and flow backwards into the lowest drain in the house, usually the basement floor drain. Older neighbourhoods, and homes whose foundation drains or downspouts connect to the sewer, are most at risk. A backwater valve closes when sewage flows the wrong way.
